Sue B and Me

My latest model, Sue B, visited on Monday, and we got three drawings done - two reclining and one standing.

Focus

This week Yvonne sat for me - and my drawings can be seen here.

Yvonne brought along some beautiful bright scarves. It is always interesting when a model brings a 'prop' or something which she likes or feels comfortable with.

I enjoyed the flowing shapes of the fabric alongside the lovely natural curves of this model.

On this occasion we started in late afternoon, and continued into the fading evening light. It was an inspiring session.

The other photograph above was taken by Monica, when she sat for me. How strange it is to see myself though the model's lens - in work mode.

Pastel

I've been concentrating on colour and form, and spending slightly longer on my drawings this week in an effort to provide more thoroughness.

Leweston School Art Exhibition

I was invited to a private view of the students' artwork at Leweston School near Sherborne yesterday.

It was a rich exhibition full of energy and ideas, with a strong leaning towards ceramic, textile and print work.

What really stood out as being unique in the context of such a show was the impressive array of Year 7's raw yet focussed architectural 'hats', constructed from cardboard tubes.

This project clearly captured the imagination of the students, and it was a real pleasure to see individual expression, and exploration of structure, shine through in each piece.

Each was unique yet together they made a fascinating and charming spectacle.

Different Poses

This week I have been drawing from the model again.

I enjoy the way that models, particularly those who have never sat before, are confident in choosing inspiring poses - which suit them.

Their poses can sometimes reflect their personalities and mood, as well as being positions that they find comfortable and can hold.

The drawings here show two different models - Gill in the two drawings above, and Monica wearing a headscarf below.

Old Grimsby

Today saw me back on the beach at Old Grimsby, this time in brilliant sunshine.

My father lived here for many years, and this is a very special place - where the wild north end of Tresco meets 'civilisation'. There are views out to the lighthouse on Round Island, and to St Martins - one of the four other inhabited island in the group.

I worked on a relatively large canvas today - approximately 110 x 80 cm, which was quite a challenge to carry as I cycled there and back.
